Albino Luciani, Pope John Paul I, was always smiling it seems. His grin, radiant as the sun, bathed whatever room he entered with a loving, divine glow.
Catholics and non-Catholics the world over yearned to bask in it. His was the smile of Christian joy that beckoned record-breaking crowds to his general audiences. There was a wondrous quality about that smile that transcended the merely human.
The Italians referred to it as “il sorisso di Dio”, the smile of God. And so it was.
